Man dies in Red Wing after high-speed police chase, crash

A Farmington man died early Sunday after he led police on a roughly 28-mile chase from Farmington into Red Wing, then drove off the road and hit a tree, according to the Farmington police department, FOX 9 reports.

The driver was identified as Cody J. Swanson, 24. According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Swanson was driving a 2011 Buick sedan about 4 a.m. Sunday in Farmington when police tried to pull him over, but he refused to stop, authorities said.

Swanson drove east on County Road 50 at a high rate of speed, with police following behind him, about 30 miles into Red Wing. Officers tried to use "stop sticks" to slow Swanson down, but he continued driving.

The Minnesota State Patrol said he then drove east onto Cannon River Avenue, near U.S. 61 and the Red Wing Shoe Co., where he veered off the road and crashed into a tree, according to the Pioneer Press. It’s not clear if alcohol was a factor. The roads were dry at the time of the accident, according to the state patrol.

Court records show Swanson was arrested for drugs and theft in Dakota County earlier this year, according to KSTP.

No officers were injured in the pursuit. One Farmington police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, though police have not released any further details, FOX 9 reports.

Officers from the Dakota County Sheriff's Office, Goodhue County Sheriff's Office and the Red Wing police department also assisted. Farmington police and the state patrol are still investigating the incident.
