A man drowned on a lake in central Minnesota after being struck by a watercraft.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says that Barry Schramel, 50, of Cold Spring, was swimming to retrieve an inflatable toy that had floated away on Knaus Lake, southwest of Cold Spring.

After he was hit by the watercraft, "he appeared to swallow water," the sheriff's office said.

"He continued to swim back to shore when a second wake from another watercraft struck him and he went under."

Several boats and people started searching the water from where he was last seen, about 30 yards from the main island near the sandbar.

He was found by searchers in six feet of water shortly after first responders arrived. He had been in the water for nearly 20 minutes.

A pulse was restored after lifesaving measures were started, and he was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital.

However, it was there that he was pronounced dead.
