Man drowns in lake after fleeing Roseville police

Investigators are still trying to determine why a man fled a routine traffic stop and ended up drowning in a lake in Arden Hills, the Star Tribune reports.

The Roseville Police Department say in a news release that an officer tried to pull the man over for a broken taillight on Cleveland Avenue at Oakcrest Avenue Sunday night around 9:30 p.m., when he sped away on Cleveland toward County Road E2.

Officers said they slowed their pursuit and lost sight of the vehicle about three miles from the start of the chase, but eventually found the vehicle crashed north of a T-intersection with County Road E2.

A canine search of the man led police to the south side of Ferrel's Lake where officers spotted the man in the water. The news release says police first summoned the man back to shore, but he responded by shouting expletives at them. When police noticed the man was having difficulty staying afloat, four officers removed their equipment and boots to swim to the area.

"Eventually, though, he did start swimming toward the officers -- he was about 40- to 50-yards out from the shoreline and as he began swimming, he began struggling and he went under," Roseville Police Lt. Loren Rosand told KSTP-TV.

The news release said officers took turns diving and searching for the suspect in approximately 20 feet of muddy water and after about five minute of search, water rescue units were called in.

The New Brighton and Lake Johanna rescue teams responded and recovered the body about 50 feet from shore at 10:15 p.m., police say. The man was pronounced dead at the Hennepin County Medical Center.

The man's identity and cause of death are expected to be released Monday. According to police, the man had apparently bought the vehicle a few days ago and it didn't have license plates.
