A man fell to his death while working on a rooftop in northern Minnesota on Tuesday.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reports that 55-year-old Hans Christopher Smith was helping a property owner removed a down tree the rooftop of a residence on the 1400 block of Walsh Road in Eagles Nest Township when he lost his footing and fell from the roof.

Smith fell approximately 20 feet and hit a propane tank on the ground.

First responders arrived at the residence and Smith was unconscious. Lifesaving efforts were attempted but Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office says it appears to be an accidental death and foul play is not suspected.

Authorities haven't confirmed it, but Hans Smith is listed as a hazardous tree removal expert who owns Beartooth Tree Service in Ely, which is 13 miles from Eagles Nest Township.
