An Oak Park Heights man shot by law enforcement on Friday has been identified.
The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office announced Monday that it had identified Anthony Michael Legato, 25, as the man shot during an incident with the Pine County Sheriff’s Office in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near the Mora exit.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has also identified the officer who shot Legato as Deputy Joshua Pepin, a five-year veteran of the Pine County Sheriff's Office who is currently on standard administrative leave.
According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office responded to a victim of an alleged domestic incident at the Grand Casino Hinckley on Friday afternoon. While en route to the casino, deputies spotted the suspect, Legato, driving a vehicle, at which point they pursued Legato as he drove south in the northbound lanes of I-35.
Legato then pulled to the side of the interstate and exited the vehicle. Deputies also pulled over, and Pepin exited his squad car. Legato then got back into his vehicle and pulled into oncoming traffic – it was during that time period that Pepin shot Legato.
Legato was immediately provided medical aid but he died at the scene.
Portions of the incident were recorded on body cameras and squad cameras. The BCA investigation is ongoing.
