The department (DPS) says Adam Russell Schneider, 31 years old, was armed with a shotgun, standing outside of his home on 460 Second St. in Cohasset when authorities were called to the residence shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday.

Schnedier ignored "repeated orders" to drop the firearm, and pointed the gun at deputies, according to the news release. At that point, Itasca County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Snyder fired his gun, striking Schneider, DPS says.

The man was transported by ambulance to Grand Itasca hospital, where he died; according to DPS, the medical examiner says he died of his gunshot wounds.

Snyder, who has been the sheriff's office for four years, is on standard administrative leave.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating, at the request of the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office. Once it's complete, the bureau will present its findings to the county attorney's office for review.
