Man fatally stabbed after verbal altercation on Blue Line train

A man was fatally stabbed after getting into an argument with another man on a Blue Line light rail train.

The stabbing happened just before 1 a.m. on Thursday, with Bloomington police and Metro Transit officers finding the stabbed man at the Mall of America station.

He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died.

Police took a man, who was still at the scene, into custody.

Metro Transit spokesman Howie Padilla says that witnesses told police the men got into a verbal altercation that "obviously, escalated into a physical fight."

One of the men pulled a knife and stabbed the other. They were the only ones involved in the fight.

"By talking to witnesses and by viewing video from the train car, investigators are confident they will soon be able to put together a more complete picture of what took place leading up to, during and after the altercation and present a case to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for consideration of criminal charges," Padilla said.

"We are working with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner to establish positive identification on the man who was killed."

The Metropolitan Council last year stopped running overnight services between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. partly because of concerns about public safety amid complaints about assaults, thefts and drug use.
