A Brooklyn Center man is facing a number of charges after police say he tried to steal a vehicle from a used car dealership, but fell asleep.

A criminal complaint posted Tuesday says employees of Carmotive in Spring Lake Park were trying to show a car to a customer the morning of March 25, but found a man sitting inside.

According to the criminal complaint:

Dean Alan Bergren, 43, of Brooklyn Center, "significantly damaged" the steering column and console area of the vehicle in what appeared to be an attempt to steal it, the manager of Carmotive told police, and then appeared to have fallen asleep in the passenger's seat of the vehicle.

The damage to the car is estimated at $5,000.

When officers arrested Bergren, they saw a baggie sticking out of his pocket. Inside the bag were bundles of marijuana, totaling approximately 22.5 grams.

Then, during a search at the Anoka County Jail, officials found eight pills of Clonazepam – a controlled substance – in his pockets.

Bergren has been charged with first-degree criminal damage to property, fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle.

If convicted, Bergren could face up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine for both the property damage and controlled substance charges, and up to 90 days in prison and $1,000 fines on the marijuana charge.
