Police are investigating after a man was found dead in a car shortly after gunshots were reported.

Officers found the man dead in the car, which was parked on the 5700 block of 33rd Avenue South, just north of the Crosstown Highway and not far from Lake Nokomis.

"Evidence at the scene suggests that a handgun may have been used in this crime," Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder said.

Officers knocked on doors to see if anyone living on the street had heard or seen anything, and investigators are now following up on those leads.

"Numerous articles of evidence" was collected by the department's crime lab, which will now be processed.
