A man in western Minnesota was found dead Monday afternoon after becoming buried in a grain bin, KARE 11 reports.

Authorities say 77-year-old Richard Rosetter was last seen around 2 p.m. while a crew was working to empty the grain bin on a Clarkfield, Minnesota farm.

Workers told Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's deputies that Rosetter had been in and out of the bin, but they thought he had left the farm with his wife, KARE 11 says. Once she returned to the property without Rosetter, the workers began searching for him.

The sheriff's office was notified of Rosetter's disappearance around 4:40 p.m, prompting rescue teams from several departments to respond. The West Central Tribune reports rescue personnel, along with numerous friends and neighbors, spent six and a half hours emptying the grain bin, where Rosetter's body was found.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises that no one enter a grain bin unless absolutely necessary and when taking proper safety precautions.

According to an NPR News Investigation, nearly 180 people have been killed in grain-related entrapments at federally regulated facilities in the U.S. between 1984 and 2012. Eleven of those deaths occurred in Minnesota.

Minnesota OSHA says the majority of fatalities involving grain-handling and storage in the state involve farmers and farm workers who are not under OSHA's jurisdiction.
