The wedding reception at the Eagles Club in New Rockford, North Dakota, was supposed to be a joyous occasion; instead, it ended with the fatal shooting of a 41-year-old man.

The attack took place early Sunday morning, as the homicide victim sat next to a woman at a table, the Forum reports. The woman was also shot and injured; her condition is unknown.

In an interview with the paper, a family member identified the deceased as Donnie Perleberg, a farmer, father and grandfather.

The shooter put his gun down following the shooting and surrendered to authorities, according to Valley News Live.

Perleberg's relatives tell the station they believe the shooter was the female victim's ex-boyfriend, who had seen the two victims talking with one another and left the reception – only to return with a firearm and attack them.

The Eddy County Sheriff's Office has not officially released the identities of the victims, according to WDAY.

The station reports charges against the shooter are pending.
