A man who was the focus of a newspaper series on the homeless this weekend in Bemidji died after being hit by a car early Sunday, the Bemidji Pioneer reports.

Police officials say Andrew Willard Reed, 54, was pronounced dead just before 5 a.m. after suffering multiple head injuries.

Reed's photo was featured in the Pioneer Sunday as part of a series of articles on several homeless men and women in Bemidji.

According to police, Reed was standing in the roadway and wearing dark-colored clothing, which prevented the driver from seeing him until it was too late.

Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin said the driver -- Floyd LaDuke -- called police and tried to revive Reed.

Mastin said LaDuke passed a breath test and showed no signs of impairment. Charges will not be pursued, authorities say.

The Pioneer says Reed's death comes three months after another homeless man's body turned up on the shore of Nymore Beach in Bemidji. Reed, the man and three other homeless people have died in public places in Bemidji since 2006.

MinnPost reports that more than 100 homeless people died in Minnesota in 2012.
