The Essentials

1. Minnetonka police are searching for a man witnesses say kidnapped a woman Thursday. Police say Jahon Douglas was seen taking ex-girlfriend Nicole Smith at gunpoint near 10301 Bren Road.

2. Smith was fortunately returned home safe to her family on Saturday, Dec. 23, Minnetonka police said in an update. Douglas is described as "dangerous and likely armed," with police urging the public to call 911 if they see him or his vehicle (more below), or know where he might be.

3. Police released vehicle information Friday morning. They're asking people to look for a silver, four-door 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, with Minnesota license plate 947-WWM. It's got a rear spoiler and one burnt out headlight. Police released two small images of the car:

What Else You Should Know

Cpt. Shelley Petersen with the Minnetonka Police Department said Friday morning a witness in the parking lot saw the kidnapping occur just before 3:40 p.m. Thursday.

Douglas and Smith, both 37 years old, have had an "on again, off again" relationship, Petersen said, and also acknowledged there have been domestic situations in the past with them.

The gun he used in the kidnapping has not been recovered, so police believe it's still in his possession.

The public are being warned not to approach Douglas if they see him, and instead call police as soon as possible while maintaining a safe distance.

Police are looking at video surveillance, squad car footage and MnDOT cameras as part of the investigation, while following up on additional leads.

Petersen said police don't know of any specific destination he might be headed to, whether in Minnesota or outside of the state.
