Man killed, 4-year-old girl injured in separate snowmobile incidents

A 63-year-old Shafer man died from injuries he sustained in a snowmobile crash in east-central Minnesota, and a 4-year-old girl was hurt in a snowmobile incident in central Minnesota over the weekend, the Associated Press reports.

Dennis Holt was killed when a snowmobile he was unfamiliar with suddenly accelerated and he hit a trailer near his driveway Sunday morning, the newspaper reports. The machine had a left-hand throttle; most snowmobiles have right-hand throttles and left-hand brakes.

In another incident over the weekend, in Rockville, a 4-year-old Milaca girl was injured when an adult giving the girl a snowmobile ride lost control and hit a fence at about 4 p.m. Saturday. Her condition was not immediately available.

Holt's death was likely the fourth snowmobile fatality of the season. A 22-year-old man was killed in a crash last week just south of the village of Rutledge.

Earlier this month, a Finland, Minnesota, snowmobiler was killed in Lake County. And in October, a teenaged girl from Osceola, Wisconsin, was killed in a snowmobile safety class when the vehicle sped off course and crashed into a loading dock.

According to statistics on the website of the Department of Natural Resources, eight people died in snowmobile incidents in the winter of 2012-2013, including one in February in Pine County.
