A man was killed in western Wisconsin when he was struck by a vehicle as he went onto a road to remove a piece of debris.

The incident happened just after 11 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 8 in Polk County, with police arriving to find the victim being attended to by paramedics and Samaritans.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said the man had been driving westbound on Hwy. 8 and stopped on the north shoulder, exiting his car and walking onto the road to "pick up a piece of metal that was laying in the road."

"As vehicles passed, the victim entered into the eastbound lane of travel, into the path of an eastbound vehicle," the sheriff's office continued.

The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. The driver who struck him pulled onto the south shoulder a short distance from the collision.
