Man killed by police in St. Cloud identified

Kirby Joseph Michael Hengel was shot by law enforcement in St. Cloud on Tuesday.

A man killed during a confrontation with police in St. Cloud Police has been identified as Kirby Joseph Michael Hengel.

Hengel died of multiple gunshot wounds on Tuesday. According to the St. Cloud Police Department, Hengel was wanted for a shooting and carjacking in St. Paul. Officers located Hengel in a vehicle in St. Cloud on Tuesday night, which he reportedly exited with a firearm.

Officers from the St. Paul Police Department, St. Cloud Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) then opened fire.

Officers attempted life-saving efforts, but Hengel died on the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is currently investigating the incident, including interviews with more than two dozen witnesses and participants. Names of officers who discharged their weapons have not yet been released.

Hegel was wanted in connection to a Monday incident in which he is accused of shooting at an officer in St. Paul and an armed carjacking. 

The BCA is investigating both incidents. The officer who discharged his weapon during the Monday shooting has been identified as Officer Alec Cruz and is on standard administrative leave.
