The 26-year-old man who was fatally shot in a home in Crystal on Halloween has been identified.

Maricio Manuel Mata-Thelen of St. Paul died from a gunshot wound to the torso at 9:01 p.m. on Oct. 31 in a home on Yates Avenue, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office says, listing the manner of death as a homicide.

A Go Fund Me page set up by a family member is raising money to help his family fund a celebration of life and also raise awareness about gun violence.

"He was an incredible young soul taken way too soon," the page says.

Mata-Thelen's mother Zita Mata spoke with the Pioneer Press, saying her son attended a small Halloween gathering the night he was killed.

"He is an innocent bystander and this is an unfortunate accident and it’s very, very tragic," she told the paper.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the incident, with the Crystal Police Department saying on Nov. 1 he turned himself in and is in custody. According to jail records, the man lives at the home where Mata-Thelen was killed.

As of 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, he had not been formally charged.
