An officer-involved incident that included shots fired in Bloomington left one person dead.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says Bloomington police were called after a report of a "suicidal" person in a residence on the 9900 block of Briar Raod, around 11:15 p.m Thursday.

According to the report:

Officers found a male outside the residence, in possession of a firearm.

Shots were fired about a half-mile away, on the 5800 block of West 99th Street.

The suspect was pronounced dead at that scene.

No officers were injured during the incident, the release says, and it's not known who fired a weapon (whether it was police, the suspect or both).

It's also unclear why the suspect and officers traveled those handful of blocks, or what happened during that time.

The sheriff's office says no further information will be available at this time, but it is investigating.

Officer-involved shootings

After a year in which police shootings led to a wave of demonstrations across the country – including in Minnesota, just months after reeling from the death of an officer – any report of an incident involving police and a fired weapon becomes of particular interest.

Thursday night's shooting comes two days after police in St. Paul fatally shot a man outside an apartment complex. They'd received a report he’d been sending threatening text messages, and were told the man was known to carry a weapon. His death prompted some groups to express concern, but the man's family has asked for calm as the investigation plays out.

This month, officers have arrested two suspects involved in a standoff.

On Jan. 1, a St. Paul police officer was shot in the face with what officials called a BB gun, after responding to a report of a suicidal man. The man eventually turned himself in. The officer was reportedly recovering.

And this week, Cottage Grove police spent all night with a man who had barricaded himself in a home, and purportedly acted hostile towards officers. He was taken into custody early Wednesday without further incident.
