Man killed, officer seriously injured in Willmar incident
State authorities are investigating an incident in which a man died and a police officer was seriously injured in Willmar.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) says it happened early Friday morning, with police initially responding to a domestic incident at a home in the 800 block of Mary Avenue Southeast around 5:40 a.m.
When officers arrived they found a male suspect inside the home, and during the course of the encounter "an officer sustained multiple knife wounds."
Subsequently, a situation evolved in which the suspect suffered injuries that led to them dying at the scene.
"At one point during the encounter one officer discharged a Taser. BCA investigators are determining whether any officers discharged a firearm," the BCA said. "It is unknown at this time whether the subject was struck by either a Taser or gunfire."
A woman who was in the home was also injured by the suspect. She was treated at Carris Health-Rice Memorial Hospital and released.
The officer was taken by ambulance to a local hospital before being airlifted to St. Cloud. The officer is in a stable condition and is expected to survive.
The deceased suspect has not yet been identified. It's also not been determined if their death was captured on body camera.
