A man died early Wednesday when his vehicle got stuck on the railroad tracks and was struck by a train in Sherburne County.
The fatal accident happened around 2:45 a.m. just southeast of St. Cloud, specifically in the 3400 block of Hwy. 10.
According to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office, witnesses saw a four-door passenger vehicle stuck on the tracks, with the driver trying to rock the vehicle back and forth to get it unstuck.
The train was traveling west at 50 mph and sounded it's horn but couldn't stop in time, and the impact caused the vehicle to burst into flames, with the man's injuries proving fatal.
Further investigation revealed that the man turned west of Hwy. 10 onto a dirt road that serves as the driveway to a private residence, and as the vehicle went over the tracks one of the front tires got stuck between the tracks after going off a concrete slab that is part of the railroad crossing.
Identification of the victim will be released following proper notification of family members. No other information is available as of noon Wednesday.
