A man suffering from a gunshot wound later died after a shooting early this morning in North Minneapolis.

According to a press release, at 2:28 a.m. ShotSpotter – the agency's gunshot-detecting technology system –notified police of a shooting in the area of 27th Avenue North and Knox Avenue North.

Officers arrived to find an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound and in critical condition.

The victim was moved to North Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The identity of the victim, as well as the nature and cause of death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

The investigation is ongoing.

Officials said that there will be more officers in the area and are asking for more community engagement in the neighborhood. Residents should expect to see more police in the area and are asked to work with officers on the issue.

Focusing on the Fourth Precinct

This shooting comes on the heels of a deadly mass shooting Wednesday night that killed one and left seven injured and after the Minneapolis Police Department said it was shifting resources and patrols to the Fourth Precinct to help combat an increase in gun violence.

Officials said this would continue until "further notice," and on Thursday the police department said they would continue the patrols seven days a week, with the help of various units to prevent future crimes.

The department said in late April it noticed increased patrols seemed to be making a difference: Registered hits on ShotSpotter decreased 49 percent, from 41 incidents down to 21, when compared to the previous weekend. (You can check out the latest ShotSpotter activation data here.)

At that time, city officials said they would continue to focus on long-term plans to help combat gun violence on Minneapolis' north side.

As of May 2, there had been 98 victims with gunshot wounds in Minneapolis this year, the city's crime statistics show. Last year at this time, there had been 55 people wounded by guns.

Data show there had been five homicides in Minneapolis as of May 2. At this time in 2015, there had been eight.
