A registered sex offender has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison in the Nov. 19 sexual assault of a college student near the Minneapolis campus of St. Catherine University, the Star Tribune reports.
Louis R. Oliver, 48, of Hastings, had pleaded guilty May 3 in Hennepin County District Court.
According to a criminal complaint, Oliver approached the woman, asked her for money and then grabbed her and told her he had a gun. He took her to a trail in a wooded area of Riverside Park and digitally penetrated her. He also hit her in the face and took her cash, backpack and wallet. The woman escaped as he told her he was taking her to an ATM to get more money.
Police arrested Oliver after Regions Hospital security officers got complaints Nov. 27 about a man approaching women in a parking ramp and asking them about jumper cables. A Ramsey County deputy helping hospital security recognized the man from police sketches in the sexual assault case.
Oliver was convicted of a sex-related crime in Minneapolis in the 1990s and also in Black Hawk County, Iowa, the newspaper reports.
The attack deeply frightened college students, and dozens of community impact statements were submitted to the court, KSTP reported.
