The man shot by police in a parking ramp at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has been charged with three counts of first-degree assault.

Mohamud Mohammed Maye, 36, will appear in court Wednesday in connection with the Saturday night incident, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Tuesday.

Maye, of Maple Plain, also goes by the alias Abdul Kadir Sheikh Mahmoud. He was shot by an airport police officer after he allegedly drove his car at them.

The complaint against Maye alleges he drove at three officers, injuring two of them and barely missing the third.

Officers fired at the car when Maye refused orders to stop. The car then crashed, Maye was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of his wounds.

Freeman said it's not clear at this point why Maye drove toward the officers. He added there is no connection between Maye and a series of rental car thefts at the airport.

Officials called this an isolated incident and said the airport is safe. It is believed to be the first time airport police have been involved in a shooting since May 1995.
