Man shot dead near kickball tournament at Minneapolis park

The incident happened in north Minneapolis Sunday evening.

A man was fatally shot in North Minneapolis on Sunday, while hundreds took part in a kickball tournament nearby.

Shots fired were reported at 16th Avenue North and Morgan Avenue at 6:55 p.m., with police arriving to find a man with gunshot wounds, who wasn't breathing and had no pulse.

He was taken to North Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The shooting happened at the southwest corner of North Commons Park, where around 400 people were participating in a kickball tournament, police said.

Some ran to the scene to see what was happening as police arrived.

No suspect has been caught at this stage, with police having interviewed many people in the area who may have seen or heard something.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released. This will come at a later stage from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

Meanwhile, friends have identified the man found dead in his car after a suspected shooting in south Minneapolis as 27-year-old Monte Whitner.

Whitner died in the early hours of Saturday morning on the 5700 block of 33rd Avenue South. KSTP reports he was a basketball coach for inner city kids and a father of three young children.
