The family of a man who drowned swimming in Lake Minnetonka is raising money on GoFundMe.
Benjamin Garcia, 26, died after swimming at Commons Beach on Lake Minnetonka Thursday evening.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Water Patrol sent three boats to search for Garcia after it was reported he had gone underwater and hadn’t resurfaced.
A DNR conservation officer saw Garcia underwater and pulled him out with the help of a Hennepin deputy. They administered life-saving measures before he was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center.
Garcia died a short time later.
The GoFundMe, set up by Garcia’s brother, is raising money for his funeral experiences and to support his family members. Garcia and his girlfriend were also preparing to have a baby girl, according to the fundraiser.
“Please help us with our burden. We want to make sure that not only does Ben have a beautiful funeral, but also help provide some assistance for his Family and soon to be born daughter,” the GoFundMe reads.
As of Saturday morning, the fundraiser had reached more than $6,300 of its $15,000 goal.
Garcia’s death marked the second on Lake Minnetonka in two days. A juvenile died after a jet ski accident on the lake on June 30.
Garcia’s brother Carols told FOX 9 that his death demonstrates the importance of water safety.
"Because my brother wasn't a good swimmer, I think it's important for people to also know that water can be dangerous, you know, even just a lake," Carlos said.
"And maybe you need to tell people, 'Hey, I can't swim,' so they know, or maybe then they won't go in so deep with you, knowing that you need to be in a safe area."
