Man who fell from back of bus improves, moves to rehab hospital

The condition of a 21-year-old Minnesota State University, Mankato student is improving after he hopped onto the back of a late-night bus and then was critically injured in a fall, the Mankato Free Press reports.

Dylan Smyth, 21, had been in critical condition for much of the past two weeks, but he has now been transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation program in Rochester, the newspaper reports.

Smyth received serious head injuries after he fell from the back of a crowded bus, commonly known as the "drunk bus," which ferries students from downtown bars to their housing on and near campus.

Police have said Smyth should have pursued other alternatives to getting home. His parents have said their son was not performing a stunt — it was an effort to get home when he couldn't get into the packed bus. In a statement, parents Paul and Troy Smyth said they were grateful for an outpouring of support and prayers for their son, noting that he remains "strong and resilient, and we are extremely proud of him."
