A man is dead following an encounter with police in western Wisconsin, just across the Minnesota border, on Saturday night.

Authorities say the incident took place around 9:45 p.m. at the Dalles House Motel in St. Croix Falls, where police were alerted to a woman needing help. Officers arrived at a guest room and were greeted by a man with a knife.

“The male refused several officer commands to drop the knife ... then rushed an officer with the knife,” police said in a statement.

The officer shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inside the guest room was a female victim who had suffered stab wounds to her chest and neck. She was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where her current condition is unknown.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. No further information has been released.
