Man who shot police officer in arm died from self-inflicted gunshot wound

The man who shot an Oakdale police officer in the arm on Thursday died after turning the gun on himself, according to police.

Washington County Sheriff's Office confirmed on its Facebook page, citing a report by KARE 11, the man killed on the 2700 block of Granite Avenue died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Star Tribune reports the man has been identified as 53-year-old Mark Kuzel.

KARE 11 reports Oakdale PD and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) were serving a search warrant on the property when the incident happened, leaving an Oakdale officer injured when he was shot in the arm.

Officers broke down the door to enter the home after receiving no response, but while searching the property they came across Kuzel, who opened fire.

Officers took cover and opened a dialogue with Kuzel, who according to WCCO told them he didn't want to go to jail, before shooting himself in the head.

The Star Tribune notes Kuzel's criminal record shows three DWI-related convictions and only minor traffic violations from more than 20 years ago.

Details of why his house was being searched have not been revealed at this stage.
