Man who stalked popular Twin Cities DJ Mary Lucia sentenced

The man convicted of stalking popular 'Current' DJ Mary Lucia will spend the next five years on probation, and during that time, must not come within 10 blocks of Lucia's home, or her work.

Those are the guidelines laid out on Wednesday at the sentencing of 56-year-old Patrick Henry Kelly, who must also pay over $9,000 in restitution to his victim, according to a news release from the Hennepin County Attorney.

This comes a little more than a month after Lucia made a triumphant return to the airwaves following a long hiatus, which she took to deal with the personal problems the stalking case had caused her.

The veteran radio personality said the situation turned her life into “a series of restraining orders, seemingly endless calls to 911, the installation of security cameras at home, and police photo ID line-ups,” according to a letter she wrote when her temporary departure was announced in April.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, Lucia told the court the nightmare started with a note from Kelly about having lost his dog; not an unusual correspondence, considering that she often talks about her "love of animals" on air, the release says.

But after she replied with her condolences, things spiraled, and before long, she was getting bizarre gifts at her workplace, MPR's The Current. Those include "five pounds of raw meat," a photo of a masked man, and "some children’s toys," the Hennepin County Attorney says.

Kelly pleaded guilty to felony stalking and making terroristic threats in August, saying in court that he takes “full responsibility” for the crimes he committed.

Though he was also sentenced to serve 270 days at the county workhouse, there will be no jail time. He has already spent 197 days behind bars and was given time off for "good conduct," the release says. He was released Wednesday morning.

“If he makes one more attempt to contact me, it will ruin his life,” Lucia said in court. “And for what?”

Indeed, the judge warned Kelly that he'll be back in court and will face prison time if he violates any of the conditions of his probation, the release says.

He has also been ordered to undergo mental health tests and cognitive skills training.
