A 65-year-old Oak Grove man died after being pulled from the water on Leech Lake near Walker Thursday afternoon.
According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office, a witness called 911 a 12:50 p.m. on Thursday to report a man struggling in the water near a pontoon in the Sand Point area of Leech Lake.
The witness said as they got closer, they could no longer see and couldn't find the man in the water.
When deputies arrived, they located the pontoon and "immediately began searching the area." They found the man's body in the lake at 2:14 p.m.
The man has not yet been identified.
The Leech Lake Tribal Police Department and the Minnesota DNR helped in the search for the missing man.
According to the Minnesota DNR, as of Aug. 8, there have been 16 non-boating drownings and 12 boating fatalities (it includes drowning while boating) this year.
In 2020, there were 49 non-boating drownings and 16 boating fatalities.
