U study: Seat belt law is saving lives, reducing injuries
The state's primary seat belt law allows officers to ticket drivers who are not wearing safety belts even if no other laws were broken. A study from the University of Minnesota says the law has saved 68 lives since it went into effect in the summer of 2009.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says eight of the first 10 people killed in traffic accidents so far this year were not wearing their seat belts. The department also reports that only 20 percent of the 23 people killed in December were buckled-up. Between 2008-2010, about 45 percent of occupants killed were properly using their seat belts.
Extra seat belt enforcement starts statewide on Friday
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety reports out of the 932 motorists that have been killed in the last three years, only 45 percent were wearing their seat belt. Violators face a $25 fine.
