A Twin Cities bar faces the rap after it was found to be selling a beer that can only legally be sold in Wisconsin.

Undercover police went to the Maple Tavern bar, in Maple Grove, after receiving an anonymous tip that it was selling Spotted Cow, the New Glarus Brewing-made beer which is not licensed in Minnesota, FOX 9 reports.

The TV station says that investigators found images of the Spotted Cow tap handle on the bar's Facebook page, and advertising the fact the beer was available.

The bar's owner told WCCO that his manager had picked up some kegs across the border because their customers had asked for them.

But he admitted his staff "didn't think through" the decision and said it won't happen again.

On the New Glarus Brewing website, it says: "Sorry about the limited distribution, non-Wisconsinites. There are only so many hours in the day to make beer and we can only keep up with the local demand. However, we would love it if you would stop by our little gift shop and pick some up."

It's not clear at this stage what punishment or fines the bar faces.
