KSTP reports a Maple Grove squad car ran into a light rail train in Minneapolis Saturday morning, leaving a Maple Grove police officer slightly injured.

Now the Star Tribune reports the victim is Officer Jesse Mathwig, who was in the news Thursday when he and a Hennepin County Sheriff's deputy pulled a motorist from a burning car.

Mathwig was hailed as a hero, according to KARE 11, because he risked his own life to rescue an unconscious driver trapped after his car hit a barrier on U.S. Highway 169 during the snowy morning commute.

The victim's daughter credited Mathwig with saving her father's life.

Just after 1 a.m. Saturday, Mathwig was returning from the juvenile detention center when his car hit the train at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 5th Street, according to police.

There was severe damage to the patrol car and minor damage to the train car.

Mathwig complained of minor hip pain, but is otherwise okay.

Metro Transit police are investigating.
