Thirty years ago Wednesday, the military barracks in Beirut were attacked by a suicide bomber, and more than 300 people were killed, along with 241 U.S. servicemen. The attack was the deadliest single-day for U.S. Marines since the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.

The Pioneer Press reports that four Minnesota Marines will be memorialized this week.

A special service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel. Relatives of the dead and Marines in dress blues will attend the ceremony.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, a 5:30 p.m. ceremony at the cemetery will honor the Marines at their gravesites. Three of the Minnesota Marines killed in the bombing are buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Section U. A fifth Marine from Minnesota took his own life days after the bombing.

A Marine Corps website has more details about the attack and a list of those killed.
