Maximum sentence handed to man in Craigslist killing

Steven E. Lewis, 27, of Maplewood, was sentenced Wednesday to about 24 years in prison, accused of luring a 19-year-old with a fake Craigslist ad for an iPhone and then killing him in a robbery in August 2012.

Ramsey County prosecutor Lawrence Schultz asked Ramsey County District Judge Margaret Marrinan for the maximum sentence, which she delivered, the Pioneer Press and Star Tribune reported.

At the sentencing, both lawyers fought back tears and the judge's voice cracked with emotion, the Star Tribune reported.

Two younger sisters for Hamline University student Aung Thu Bo read victim impact statements, and his mother attempted to speak but was too overcome with emotion, the newspapers reported.

Lewis apologized, the Pioneer Press reported. "It never was supposed to go the way it did," he told the court.

Lewis in July had admitted to the slaying but told a judge he had never intended to kill Bo.

At the time of the shooting last year, police said there had been four instances in a week in which a victim was lured in St. Paul by someone advertising an iPhone on Craigslist, the Star Tribune reported.

Huffington Post earlier this summer examined how the online classified ad site Craigslist has become a common thread in a number of disturbing crimes.

In another high-profile case in 2007, 24-year-old Minnesotan Katherine Olson was killed after she went to answer a Craigslist ad for a babysitter. Michael John Anderson was convicted in the case.
