Minnesota is home to one of the nation's best hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2015 Best Hospitals list released Tuesday.

The Mayo Clinic lost its No. 1 spot to Massachusetts General Hospital this year, with the Rochester hospital coming in at No. 2 on the list of 15.

The yearly analysis looks at the best medical centers for patients with life-threatening or rare conditions. The report analyzes factors that include patient survival rates, adequacy of the nursing staff, reputation with specialist physicians, and patient safety. It bases the hospitals on performance in 16 complex care specialties.

Just 137 hospitals (that's less than 3 percent of the United States' total) earned a national ranking in at least one specialty. Only 15 hospitals achieved high scores in at least six of the 16 categories.

The Mayo Clinic ranked nationally in 15 out of the 16 adult specialties, including a No. 1 ranking nationally in eight adult specialties:

  • Diabetes and endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology and GI surgery
  • Geriatrics
  • Gynecology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology and neurosurgery
  • Pulmonology
  • Urology

This year's best hospital – Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston – is ranked nationally in all 16 adult specialties, but is ranked No. 1 nationally in just one specialty: ear, nose and throat.

Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which lost a 21-year-first-place reign in 2012, came in tied at No. 3 on the list with UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

This year's report also breaks down the best hospitals by region. Here's a look at the top five hospitals in Minnesota, according to the report:

  1. Mayo Clinic, Rochester
  2. Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis
  3. St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud
  4. University of Minnesota Medical Center, Minneapolis
  5. Mercy Hospital, Coon Rapids

And the top five in the Twin Cities region:

  1. Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis
  2. University of Minnesota Medical Center, Minneapolis
  3. Mercy Hospital, Coon Rapids
  4. Woodwinds Health Campus, Woodbury
  5. North Memorial Hospital, Robbinsdale
