Mayo Clinic plans to open an expanded Sports Medicine Center at the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center in Rochester next spring, according to a news release.

"Mayo Clinic is able to serve athletes of all levels in a multidisciplinary environment that can manage the entirety of our patients' needs," Sports Medicine Center co-director Dr. Edward Laskowski said in a statement. "We have long served professional and amateur athletes involved in a wide variety of sports. This expansion will allow us to better serve our athletes with cutting-edge technology, facilities and programs."

The medical giant's new facility is part of the 100,000-square-foot employee wellness center project already under construction. It will feature multiple playing surfaces, such as wood for basketball and volleyball, artificial grass for turf sports and artificial ice for hockey.

Mayo says the center is designed to be one of the premier hockey training centers in the country that will include a skating treadmill as well as stick-handling and shooting-specific equipment.

"We have long served professional and amateur athletes involved in a wide variety of sports," add Dr. Laskowksi. "This expansion will allow us to better serve our athletes with cutting-edge technology, facilities and programs."
