The New Ulm Journal reports that a long-time Republican activist is mulling a challenge to incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Walz in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District.

Scott Wright, a physician who works in the Mayo Clinic Division of Cardiology, told the paper that he hopes to make a decision about the 2014 race in a matter of days.

Wright has practiced medicine for more than two decades. He told the paper that his concern about the Affordable Care Act has prompted his interest in serving in Congress; he said that more medical professionals need to shape how it is implemented.

Wright served on the Minnesota Health Care Transformation Task Force under Gov. Tim Pawlenty. He also served a Minnesota State GOP Executive Committee member for three years.

So far, only Rep. Mike Benson of Rochester has officially declared his candidacy. Other potential candidates include former Senators Al DeKruif and Mike Parry.
