Mayo plans $72 million expansion, renovation at St. Marys Hospital

The Mayo Clinic will spend more than $72 million expanding its flagship hospital in Rochester. The plan announced Monday includes the addition of five floors to St. Marys Hospital and is one of the first projects in Mayo's 20-year expansion plan dubbed Destination Medical Center.

As the Pioneer Press reports, a state promise to fund more than $320 million of infrastructure improvements in Rochester will be triggered once Mayo puts $200 million into capital spending, and the St. Marys expansion apparently starts the clinic on the path to that threshold.

The two-year construction project slated to start next spring will add five floors to the Mary Brigh East Building, Mayo said in announcing the expansion. It also includes renovation of the third floor at the Domitilla Building. Mayo officials say the new space will allow them to move patient beds out of Joseph Hall, a building that dates from 1922 and is considered outdated.

MPR notes the new project comes on top of an expansion underway now. That one is adding four stories and expanding the emergency room.

Mayo said last spring it plans to merge St. Marys with Rochester Methodist with the combination to be known as Mayo Clinic Hospital, the Star Tribune reported.
