A preliminary report from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office reveals that a high school football player's death Friday night was caused by congenital heart disease.
Jackson Pfister, 15, died after collapsing on the field during Esko's varsity football game at Aitkin High School on Friday night.
Paramedics were sent to Veterans Field in Aitkin at approximately 9:19 p.m. Friday. Pfister was treated at the scene and then transported by North Memorial Ambulance to Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin, where he died a short time later.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Pfister family, Jackson’s teammates and the Esko community," Aitkin PD said in a release.
Pfister's death has been met with an outpouring of support from surrounding communities, with around 50 students attending a gathering at Esko High School on Sunday afternoon, where grief counselors are on hand for students and staff, according to WDIO.
In a statement, EsKo Superintendent Aaron Fischer said “Jackson was a tremendous young man that brought joy to everyone he was around. The entire community is grieving this loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
