Medtronic loses appeal of patent infringement case

Medtronic says it is evaluating its next step after a court rejected the company's appeal of a $74 million patent infringement ruling. The ruling could eventually force Medtronic to stop making one of its heart valves if a competitor - Edwards Lifesciences - seeks an injunction.

Medical device maker Medtronic was unsuccessful in its effort to overturn a $74 million jury verdict in a patent infringement case. The appeals court ruling also gives Edwards Lifesciences the right to seek an injunction blocking Medtronic from making some of its CoreValve heart valves.

The product replaces damaged aortic valves without open heart surgery. Medtronic's product is still awaiting approval from the FDA, but is on the market in Europe and has been implanted in sixty countries.
