A public memorial service for former Minnesota Governor Wendell Anderson was announced yesterday by Governor Dayton's office for Monday Aug. 15.

It will be held at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church (5025 Knox Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55419). Both the reception and service are open to the public. The reception precedes the 1 p.m. service.

Anderson died Sunday morning at the age of 83.

Governor Dayton already ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff through Sunday, July 24 but also from sunrise to sunset on the day of the memorial.

The former Olympian, and one of the youngest Minnesota governors ever, accomplished the "Minnesota Miracle of 1971" – a bipartisan agreement to reform the state's public schools and local governments – just a year into his term.

A statement from his family reads:

"Wendell Anderson was many things: A kid from East St. Paul. A Gopher. An Olympian. An elected public servant of the highest order. But above all else he was a Minnesotan. His love for the state and its citizens was second only to his love for his family."
