Men accused of killing 90-year-old indicted on more severe charges

The two men accused in the fatal beating of 90-year-old Earl Olander are now facing more severe charges.

Reinol Godines Vergara (35, of Richfield) and Edson Celin Dominguez Benitez, (29, of St. Paul) were charged in March with second-degree offenses.

On Wednesday, the Chaska Herald reports, a Carver County grand jury indicted the pair on two counts of aiding first-degree murder.

A first-degree murder conviction carries a life sentence. (Second-degree is up to 40 years in prison.)

Authorities have said Olander was found dead in his home, with his hands bound, having apparently been the victim of a severe beating. His house was described as "ransacked."

Vergara and Benitez were arrested after a man cleaning out a St. Paul apartment found savings bonds, issued to Olander, inside a Bible according to the charges. He called police, and investigators learned Benitez used to live there, the complaint states.

More details from the charges can be read here.
