2 Bemidji men arrested in cross-burning case
Two Bemidji men, ages 19 and 20, were arrested Wednesday in connection with an 8-foot burning cross reported in a yard north of the city last month. The incident is being investigated as a "bias crime." The woman who reported it is white and her two adult children have a father who is black.

Sentencing has been set for Oct. 10 for Derek Barnes, who remains in Beltrami County Jail and faces up to five years in prison, the Bemidji Pioneer reports. Police say he and an accomplice, also charged, put an 8-foot cross in a yard and lit it. A woman who lived in the home at the time, who is white, has two adult children whose father is black.
