Met Council, St. Paul housing authority eye potential Midway project

The ongoing renovation of University Avenue in St. Paul for the Central Corridor light rail has caused plenty of headaches for existing business owners, but it also continues to spur redevelopment.

To that end, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that officials with the Metropolitan Council and the St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Agency believe that there's plenty of room for redevelopment.

The Met Council owns 9.37 acres near Snelling and University avenues, the paper reports, and the HRA has the option to buy an additional 4.6 acres of contiguous land in the same location. Met Council officials said they're seeking input from professionals with planning expertise in urban areas adjacent to public transit.

The Met Council owns the land that houses a Metro Transit "bus barn" -- a giant parking lot, essentially -- along a frontage road to I-94 that seems prime for redevelopment

The goal, according to the PiPress is a project that would "serve as a model for regional transit-oriented development" and "minimizes additional traffic congestion and is not principally auto-focused."

Currently nearby, the paper reports, the Midway Marketplace shopping area -- with a Target, Walmart and soon a T.J. Maxx -- is almost full.
