Minn. adds jobs, unemployment rate holds steady
Minnesota employers added 8,400 jobs in May while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.3 percent, a five-year low, the Star Tribune reports.
The numbers are good news for the state after two month of job losses and a U.S. unemployment rate of 7.6 percent in the same month. The state also lost fewer jobs in April than originally estimated, the Associated Press noted.
Job gains were driven by industries that typically hire more workers in summer months like construction, leisure and hospitality, according to the newspaper.
MPR says government and professional and business services also saw significant job growth.
Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says the state has gained just over 93 percent of jobs lost during the recession.
