Minn. women next in line to file suit against Wal-mart

A Minneapolis law firm is going after Wal-Mart on behalf of female employees alleging gender discrimination, the Business Journal reports.

Nichols Kaster, PLLP, filed a federal class action complaint against the giant retailer in Wisconsin last week. A Minnesota case could be filed within six months, according to the law firm.

The suit claims women at Wal-Mart were told by management that they deserved less pay and fewer promotions than men because men had families to support.

A nationwide gender-discrimination suit involving more than 1.5 million women was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011, ruling that bundling of a diverse group of employees--present and former, management and labor--into a single class failed the test of commonality required in class actions.

Since the ruling, the Wisconsin case is the fifth regional discrimination case filed against Wal-Mart. The law firm has also filed lawsuits on behalf of women in California, Florida, Tennessee and Texas.

"We’ve said all along that if someone believes they have been treated unfairly, they deserve to have their timely, individual claims heard in court," Wal-Mart spokesperson Randy Hargrove said in a statement. "We have had strong policies against discrimination for many years and have a long history of providing advancement opportunities for our female associates."
