A Minneapolis bridge will be dedicated on Tuesday night to the city's first African-American mayor, and its first female mayor, Sharon Sayles Belton.

The bridge, which takes Third Avenue South over Interstate 94, was built during Sayles Belton's tenure, which ran from 1994 to 2001.

The span's design was inspired by the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, MinnPost noted. The renaming of the bridge coincides with placing new artwork at the plaza on the north side of the bridge.

A new public sculpture honoring Sayles Belton’s accomplishments will be lit for the dedication, the Associated Press notes.

“Rededicating this iconic Minneapolis landmark the Sharon Sayles Belton Bridge is a fitting tribute to our former mayor, who was, and continues to be, a bridge builder on so many levels,” Mayor R.T. Rybak said earlier this year when the bridge-naming was announced.
