After a week of troubling news concerning the Minneapolis Police Department, Chief Janeé Harteau is in the headlines for reasons that have nothing to do with her leadership of the department.

The Star Tribune reports that Harteau married her longtime partner Holly Keegel on Friday night. Keegel is a sergeant in the department.

WCCO reports that the city's top cop took to Twitter on Saturday night to announce her marriage, tweeting a photo and the message, “Yes it’s true! I married my soulmate of 25 yrs last night.Thx 4 support &grateful for folks that fought for us all!”

Congratulatory tweets from city hall colleagues, broadcasters and others have followed.

The columnist CJ wrote that the chief called her Saturday with details of the nuptials, which have been planned for about a month but were kept private until the ceremony was complete. Mayor R.T. Rybak officiated at the private event, attended by immediate family, including the couple's teenage daughter. It was held at Prohibition at the W Hotel in the Foshay Tower in downtown Minneapolis. The service was followed by a reception with about 70 guests.

Same sex marriage became legal in Minnesota on August 1, following action by the state legislature.
