Minneapolis council ready to name Harteau new police chief

Minneapolis city council members are poised to approve Janee Harteau's nomination as police chief at their Wednesday meeting. Harteau, who will be the city's first female chief, tells MPR it's a proud moment for her, but also a scary moment as she feels all eyes upon her.

Harteau has spent 25 years working her way up through the chain of command in Minneapolis, which is one reason she was an appealing choice to Mayor R.T. Rybak. Harteau tells MinnPost her decision to pursue police work came from a spiritual calling.

While she's becoming the top cop in the Minneapolis, Harteau's career is also being watched by friends and family in her native Duluth. In an interview with the Duluth News-Tribune last spring she reminisced about her days at Denfeld High and Hibbing Community College, when she emulated Pat Benatar as the lead singer in a rock band.

Harteau is currently the acting police chief. Mayor Rybak formally nominated her in late October, just before the retirement of her predecessor, Tim Dolan.
